Blossoming A Relationship
Let's face it. Hollywood's version of blossoming relationships cuts to scenes of bars, or of great escapes from the clutches of villains. In most versions, the guy and the gal falls in love and falls in bed. The formula is getting rather tiresome, predictable, and really un-educational as far as giving real life pointers on how to develop relationships.
Are there some universal principles we mere mortals can embrace into our lives? I love simple truths. Simple but powerful. And applicable for blossoming relationships.
First, it's about the big A for attitude! The proportion to which we truly welcome someone into our world, into our lives will correlate to the person's reciprocity. A true spirit of welcoming someone into our lives brings with it the inevitable package called vulnerability. A true welcome makes one transparent and vulnerable. Do what you can to communicate that you truly welcome the other person into your life.
Second, it's about giving the other person our undivided attention. It's like being in the zone. When you're in the zone, the whole world seems to time freeze, and all you're conscious of and absorbed with is the other person. Think Neo in the Matrix. It's a powerful connection, almost intoxicating. Scary but desirable.
Third, it"s about investing in one another, enriching each other's life. Both are enriched. It is not a one-way traffic. It's not about selfishness or self-centredness. It's a desire to benefit the other person more than one self. It's reciprocal. It's mutual encouragement, value-added.
Fourth, it's about transformation. It's often said that couples who love each other grows to be more and more like each other as the years pass. The point is this, we tend to become more like those we hang out with. It's about growing in understanding one another, appreciating each other's views and values, accepting one another. Both walk upon an ever growing and flowering field of love for one another. In every relationship both persons are changed, transformed, in one way or another, for better or for worse.
"And you shall love your neighbour as yourself." - Jesus Christ
