Faith

I believe that everyone believes in something or someone or some ideals, values or principles. An atheist has his or her beliefs too. In fact, everyone who has the mental capacity to think - believes. A lunatic might be loose in the upstairs department, but he firmly believes in whatever he believes in!

So whether people like it or not, the word faith comes into play. Whatever you believe in, you have faith in - somewhat. Such a belief of belief system may or may not work, may be logical or illogical - but you believe in it. Communism is a belief system. So too is democracy or theocracy and a whole lot of other matters.

Once upon a time, the medical profession believed that draining people's blood is a medical cure. I wonder how many patients died from the resulting loss of blood. Or, what about man taking to flight - an unthinkable achievement though often dreamed about. Truth is our beliefs either set us free or they trap us.

Some people are willing to die for their beliefs - either for social & political freedom, or for a religious cause. Others, in their fervency of beliefs, are willing for the deaths of some other people - a necessary price - though not paid by themselves. It costs others their lives.

Beliefs are powerful - for better or worse. It boils down to the very question - are our beliefs or sets of beliefs based on truth or lies? Some believe that truth is relative. If that is so, truth is then subjective. It depends on one's personal interpretation. But I believe that truth is objective. It's the interpretation of truth that might be subjective.

Measurements, for example, cannot be relative. It is objective. Imagine two carpenters arguing over the metric length of a plank, just because both used measuring tapes that different in accuracy. Enough said.

What do you believe about life? About yourself?
