Fatal Attraction

Like moths in the night
Attracted to the light

A candle in the room
Flickering warmth to comfort the gloom

Why are we people
Capable and rational

Drawn to the darker side of things
Relishing the momentary thrills they bring

Knowing but not resisting
Staying instead of running

Breaking faith with one's spouse
Giving in to self-centeredness

Destroying the vow 'I do'
Why buy in to Hollywood lies that infidelity is cool?

What are we turning into?

Beasts with burdens
Creatures of lust
Driven by burning passions

Torching our homes and family
Deluding ourselves that true happiness is what pleasures you!

Even at the expense of loved ones
Should self-love sacrifice our loved ones at the altar of infidelity?

But we say, 'but I'm not in an adulterous relationship'

But Jesus says that adultery is not merely a physical act
Rather it is a state of mind and heart

And so, looking at another person lustfully
Invading that person's sexuality in one's mind is adultery

But we say, 'but I've not looked at anyone that way'

But what about the way we watch movies and surf the net
The pictures and stories that linger there

In one's personal search for intimacy and a cure for loneliness

The TV screen and the computer screen becomes
The window into fantasies

Becomes a daily addict in need of ecstasies

Like moths dancing closely, nearer to the flame
Destroying the intimacy God desired for every couple

But we argue,  'isn't it fate that draws moths to the flames'
No, my friends, they were drawn to the light, not the flames

There is the light of the candle that singes and burns the moth black & crisp

There is the light of God that brings light and life, out of the eclipse

Candle light and candle wax, graveyard of the moths

Jesus Christ, His very body, a grave for my sins & evil past
Jesus Christ, resurrected, my hope & my new life

Both the candle and Jesus are fatal attractions, one's bad, one's good
I choose Jesus, my God & Savior.
